This summer flower finds mention in the Sangam work Kurinjipaattu, where 99 flowers from the mountainous regions are listed. This flower has a very heady fragrance, and is hence called the nectar-flower (தேன்மலர் பாதிரி). The fragrance of pathiri flowers is used as a metaphor of longing in classical Tamil poetry. A close cousin, the red trumpet flower, is called 'patala' or 'patali' in Sanskrit literature.
